Community Surveillance Working Group Vacancies – application deadline Aug 17
The City of Seattle is looking for volunteers to serve on the Community Surveillance Working Group (CSWG). The seven-member work group advises the Council and the Mayor’s Office on matters of surveillance technology from a community perspective. The Surveillance Ordinance took effect in 2018 and provides greater transparency to the public when the City of Seattle acquires any technology that meets the City’s definition of surveillance.
The group is comprised of community members of whom at least five members must represent equity-focused organizations serving or protecting the rights of communities. The group members review surveillance technology documentation & work with other CSWG members to deliver a Privacy and Civil Liberties Impact Assessment report detailing potential impacts to the communities they serve/represent through the City’s use of the technology. Essentially both considering the technology itself but most importantly community impacts and considerations thereof.
If you are interested in serving on the Surveillance Working Group, please submit your application online. Under “Which Boards would you like to apply for?” select Community Surveillance Working Group. Please also include a copy of your latest resume and submit by August 17th, 2023

Why it matters: We want to ensure that community members are heard and represented. This group represents and speaks to lived experience, and we want to ensure we are speaking to considerations and outcomes that may exist as and if this technology is adopted. The Community Surveillance Working Group will review each Surveillance Impact Report (SIR) final draft and complete a Civil Liberties and Privacy Assessment, which will then be included with the SIR and submitted to Council. They are a critical voice in each technology that is/or is not adopted.
